Coat of Arms was excited and honored to volunteer our services to The Midwest Independent Film Festival in the creation of their introductory titles. The Midwest Independent Film Festival screens regionally produced films every first Tuesday of the month.

Upon conceptualizing the style and look for the titles, Coat of Arms sent the following creative brief to the Festival’s director, Mike McNamara:

“The Midwest Independent Film Festival celebrates the Midwest filmmaker’s creative lens. In deconstruction of that lens, Coat of Arms proposes that the Festival’s introductory titles embrace the Midwest landscape through refraction (both visually and audibly) thus truly capturing the essence of film and of The Midwest Independent Film Festival — cinematic art.

Pieces of each landscape (e.g. prairie, Chicago’s skyline, farms, the open road, forest, lakes, etc) split and build from shard-like graphics to expose the beauty of the Midwest. The harsh fragments are softened by nature’s landscape, but the fragments force us to look at that landscape from a different perspective. The name of the festival and of its sponsors will mimic the harsher shapes with geometric form while accenting the landscape’s visuals. Audio cues will clearly define the build of each landscape, help it evolve, and will bring drama to the entrance of each title.

These introductory titles will prepare The Midwest Independent Film Festival audience for an evening of illuminating cinema.”

While preparing a rough cut and an animatic, Coat of Arms simultaneously searched for a song. One of our favorite bands hailing from Detroit, IAMDYNAMITE (Brando Records) agreed to license their song “Where Will We Go” for the Festival’s titles.

Along with some Chicago landscapes, the titles include footage from various independent films previously screened and celebrated in the Festival.

Hopefully, we’ll catch you at The Midwest Independent Film Festival for the debut of the titles and for some independent films on Tuesday, June 5, 2012. Enjoy the show!
